WOODSTOCK — Congregants and visitors alike can start the New Year in a worshipful way at some churches in Cherokee County.

St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church will present the Mary Mother of God Holy Day Vigil mass Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. It will be a bilingual service. Masses on Jan. 1 are 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. The 11 a.m. service will be bilingual. The church is at 490 Arnold Mill Road, Woodstock.

Timothy Lutheran Church is having services Dec. 29 with Holy Communion at 8:30 a.m. The church will have a New Year’s Eve service at 7:30 p.m. with Holy Communion for those who would like to attend.

“We have a service with Holy Communion,” said Steve Constien, pastor at Timothy Lutheran. “It is a great way to bring this past year to a close and receive forgiveness and receive forgiveness in the coming year.”

The pastor said the church encourages all in the community to attend the church’s service to bring in the New Year.

“We are delighted when people come and worship with us. It is a general welcome to all of our friends and neighbors,” Constien said.

Constien said the New Year’s Eve service draws those who want to give thanks as well for all the blessings of the previous year.

“We thank God for his promises to be with us and his forgiveness through Jesus,” Constien said.

In the coming year, the church is thankful to welcome the growth of the preschool program, the pastor said.

In addition, Timothy’s Cupboard, the church’s outreach food pantry, has continued to serve Cherokee County.

“We are the largest provider to those in need with our food bank. We want to serve more folks. There is a project to expand it. The growth being in physical dimension and in the number of people we serve,” he said.

Timothy Lutheran Church opened Timothy’s Cupboard in 1991. The food bank is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. by appointment. Every member of Timothy is a part of the ministry. The Cupboard distributes around a quarter of a million pounds of food throughout the county annually.
