Cherokee schools closed Tuesday, teachers to report

The Cherokee County School District has closed schools for Tuesday due to weather, but teachers and school district employees are to report by 10 a.m. Following is the message from the school system:

This is to advise that due to continued severe temperature and wind chill factors, the superintendent has authorized the closure of schools for students on Tuesday, Jan. 7.   All School District employees will report to their respective work site locations at 10 a.m.

The following warnings and advisories, as communicated by the Cherokee County Emergency Operations Center remain in place:

  • Winter Weather Advisory – until Noon on Monday. light snow before noon with dangerous wind chills. Temperatures will remain below freezing for more than 60 hours.
  • Wind Chill Warning – Noon Monday – 1:00 PM Tuesday. Wind chill advisory has been upgraded to wind chill warning for Cherokee County. Wind Chills 10 to 20 below zero Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. Wind Chills could be lower in some areas Tuesday morning. This is a rare and dangerous situation. Frost bite could occur in less than 30 minutes.
  • Wind Advisory – until  Monday Midnight: Northwest Winds 15 to 20 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH Strong winds will make driving difficult, down trees and cause power outages. Dangerous wind chills will also result. Isolated power outages have occurred during the night.

    All employees working less than a 190-day contract do not need to report to work tomorrow at 10 a.m., including nurses, bus drivers, food service staff, and select clerical.
