Wrestlers who won their first two matches at the sectional meets know they will be competing for a state championship, regardless of how they finish today.

Those wrestlers are assured of finishing in the top eight of their weight class, qualifying them for next week’s state tournament in Duluth.

In Class the AAAAAA sectional at Mill Creek, Woodstock’s Tristan Watson (113) is still in the winners’ bracket, as are Zach Shareef (145), Etowah’s Alex Rusk (120), Karl Davis (152), Brandon Reibly (160), Bronson Rechsteiner (170) and Dylan Wagner (126).

Woodstock’s Daniel Benitez (285) won his opening match and will compete in the semifinals today.

Suffering losses Friday, but still competing in the consolation bracket for one of the qualifying spots for the state championships, are Woodstock’s Alex Gomez (106), Duncan Morris (170), Austin Biggers (195) and London Demetriou (182), Etowah’s Josh Thomas (113), Joey Payton (132), Jake Wagner (145), Jesse Sullivan (182), Ray Hardin (195) and Cherokee’s Max McMahan (120) and Evan Adcox (152).

Biggers and Harding will meet today in their first match.

Cherokee’s Lee Hands (126) and Chris Gillmartin (126) went 0-2 in their matches and were eliminated.

In the Class AAAAA sectional at Cambridge, which features wrestlers from Creekview and Sequoyah, the Grizzlies positioned themselves well with several wrestlers in the semifinals.

Among them are Bryce Davis (106), Grant Slater (120), Ryan Camp (126), Coda Stewart (152), Hunter Smith (170), Joseph Sorrentino (182) and Brock Tupman (285).

Sorrentino pinned his two opponents in less than a combined 3 minutes.

Creekview’s Justin Goss (132) won his first match, but lost his second to fall into the consolation bracket, where he will wrestle Effingham County’s Jacob Brabham today.

Kyle Merenda (145) lost his first match, but stayed alive with back-to-back wins, including an overtime victory to keep his state title hopes alive. Also losing in the first round, but still in contention, is Christian Saragusa (220).

Logan Ridings (195) was swept in his two matches, and is the only Grizzly who has been eliminated.

Also eliminated was Alex Bryant (126), Sequoyah’s only representative at the sectional.

River Ridge had just one wrestler in the Class AAAA sectional at Fayette County, with Seth Nama (160) losing his first two matches and being eliminated.
