Prep Roundup: Etowah gets off to early start in win over Roswell

Etowah scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, on its way to a 3-1 win over Roswell on Thursday.

H.D. Dillard drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first, and after Jake Swan’s single, Dillard scored on a double by Will Campbell. Tristan Mooney then reached on a single that also allowed Swan to score and Campbell to advance to third.

The next batter, J.T. Thomas used a sacrifice fly to plate Campbell before Roswell got out of the inning.

Nick DeSantis pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks for the win.

Late Wednesday

River Ridge 5, Cedartown 1:
Ryan Worley gave up five hits over five innings, but he didn’t surrender any runs as the Knights won their Region 7AAAA opener.

River Ridge (5-6, 1-0) scored two runs in the top of the first. Dalton Martin led off with a single and scored when Elijah Brague hit a triple two batters later. Brague then scored when Austin Stanley reached on an error.

The Knights tacked on two more in the second. Parris Collins, who singled, scored on a double by Luke Berryhill. After Berryhill stole third and Martin was walked, Berryhill came home on a passed ball.

River Ridge scored its final run in the fourth when Zach Wilkin, who led off with a single, crossed the plate on a double by Martin.

Cedartown scored its only run in the seventh inning.

Martin finished the game 2-for-2 with walk, an RBI and a run scored. Brague finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run.

Cherokee 10, Wheeler 0 (5 inn.): The Warriors exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning of a Region 5AAAAAA game that was ended by the mercy rule.

Jacob Good went 2-for-2 with a double to lead Cherokee (6-6, 2-0).

Cherokee took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added another pair in the fourth by stringing together doubles by Good, Trevor Nevill and Logan Hornback.

Aden Swayze pitched five innings for Cherokee, striking out four, walking three and giving up just one hit.

Ty Ervin and Austin Pharr also doubled for Cherokee, while Alex Amaro drove in two runs.

Roswell 2, Etowah 1: The Eagles mustered more hits than the Hornets, but they were still on the losing end of the Region 5AAAAAA game.

Ty Cohen allowed one earned run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Caleb Shelton took the loss for the Eagles as he allowed one run in a third of an inning.

Roswell took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Etowah tied it on an RBI single by Noah Karst in the fourth inning. That score held until the bottom of the seventh.

Jake Swan went 2-for-4 and Tristen Mooney was 2-for-3 with a walk for the Eagles.
