Prep Roundup: Hornback leads Cherokee victory

Logan Hornback hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning, and Cherokee beat Roswell 4-3 on Monday to secure a win over last year’s Class AAAAAA state runner-up.

After trailing by three runs going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Warriors scored two runs on a two-out, two-run single by Ben Banas. That scored Aaron Veres and Hornback.

Cherokee (7-13, 3-6 Region 5AAAAAA) tied it in the sixth when Hornback singled, stole second and scored on a double by Trevor Nevill.

In the eighth, Veras reached first on an error, took second on an error and took third on a balk. He came home on a Hornback single.

Veras pitched all eight innings for the Warriors, giving up six hits, struck out four and one earned run.

Cherokee, which snapped a seven-game losing streak, will play at Roswell today.


Late Monday

Etowah 19, Wheeler 5:
Victoria Stairs scored six goals, while Kelly Freire and Alexia Audet each finished with five as the Lady Eagles dominated the Area 2AAAAAA game.

Stairs and Beth Haynes also recorded assists, while Caylin Roszina made four saves.
