Already planning on hosting two new Friday game additions to the 2014 Corky Kell Classic, McEachern High School will now serve as host for the whole thing.
The Corky Kell, a five-game football showcase, which is annually played the first Saturday of the season at the Georgia Dome and televised by Georgia Public Broadcasting, needed to be relocated once the Atlanta Falcons preseason schedule was announced. The Falcons will host the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 23, and unfortunately, that game date cannot be changed.
“The Falcons have always had the right of first refusal,” Corky Kell executive director Dave Hunter told the Gwinnett Daily Post. “It was kind of the perfect storm. It’s never happened to us in 23 years. We’re extremely disappointed not to be in the Dome, but we’re going to have a great event at McEachern.”
Messages left for McEachern athletic director Jimmy Dorsey seeking further comment were not returned.
Cantrell Stadium, which seats 12,500 and is the largest high school football stadium in Georgia, has become the home of special football events in recent years. For two seasons the Indians hosted the “Battle of I-75” in which McEachern, Hillgrove, Walton and Lassiter played an east Cobb vs. west Cobb round robin. The school has also hosted the Cobb All-Star Senior Bowl the last seven years and the inaugural Georgia Northwest Bowl — a game that pits an all-star team from Cherokee and Bartow counties against the best of Paulding and Douglas — in 2013. In addition to those two senior all-star games, the stadium was also the site of last year’s inaugural Georgia Elite Junior Classic.
With the change in venue, the schedule and some of the matchups have been altered.
Carrollton and Kell will still kick off Saturday’s action at 8:45 a.m., but instead of Mill Creek taking on McEachern in the second game, it will face Colquitt County at 11:45 a.m. The Indians will now face North Gwinnett in the night cap, which moves Norcross and Tucker to the 5:30 p.m. slot. Brookwood and Valdosta will remain the middle game at 2:45 p.m.
The two Friday night games — North Paulding vs. Creekview at 5:30 p.m. and Archer vs. Sandy Creek at 8:30 p.m., will go on as originally scheduled.
