CANTON — A mother and her three-year-old child were sent to the hospital Thursday after their SUV overturned on Interstate 575 in Canton.

At about 2:15 p.m., the 23-year-old’s black Ford Explorer flipped several times before landing on its side on the northbound side of the interstate, near Exit 16, said Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.

The woman and child were sent to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta after the wreck.

“The 23-year-old female driver was complaining of an ankle injury, and the three-year-old baby was unharmed,” Cavender said in a news release. “The baby was strapped inside a car seat at the time of the accident.”

No other injuries were reported.

Assistant Canton Fire Chief Donnie Arp, who also responded to the scene, said the Canton Police Department is investigating the cause of the wreck.

Traffic was backed up a few miles as authorities worked to clear the scene and investigate.
