A passenger riding in the bed of a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck was thrown from the truck bed when the vehicle was involved in an accident Wednesday afternoon that also injured four others.

The two-vehicle wreck led to five occupants being transported to WellStar-Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for treatment, a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson said.

Authorities said around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Robert Keith Raines, 18, of Canton, was attempting to make a left turn onto Lexington Avenue while traveling north on Towne Lake Hills South.

“A Ford SUV was traveling south on Town Lake Hills South, approaching the intersection,” the GSP spokesperson said. “The pickup turned left and the Ford struck it in the right side. A passenger in the bed of the pickup was ejected from the vehicle.”

The Ford Expedition was driven by Matthew James Matherly, 17, of Woodstock, authorities said.

Matherly and a passenger riding in the SUV, along with the three who were in the pickup, were all taken to the hospital after the wreck.

The wreck is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
