Wake up, America! When a culture sleeps, vandals still sack and pillage, as in the days of ancient Rome. Often, it is not art treasures and other material treasures that are stolen. Often, it is the character and capacity of the people that is lost. Rome could have been rebuilt after the Gauls breached their walls, had the people not been dispirited. Historically, they were already demoralized before the first adversary mounted their defenses.

Wake up, America! Every cause has an effect.

America is having an alarming number of violent acts involving guns. Tragedies involving gun violence are occurring with increasing regularity. We have got to have gun control. Not the kind some legislators are proposing. We have got to control our glamorization of gun abuse in movies, sitcoms, novels and news reports. Gun violence is depicted without the consequence being shown. Seeing this, persons are inspired to go and do likewise. Every cause has an effect. The effect in our society is gun violence. The cause is how guns are depicted in our entertainment media.

America is experiencing unprecedented out-of-wedlock births, a rash of STDs and marriage breakups. Records from a recent year indicate 40.7 percent of the births in America were out of wedlock. The cause is the popularization of promiscuity by our entertainment media, which again does not show the heartbreak resulting.

Every effect has a cause. The effect is broken homes and lives, medical expenses and a burden on our welfare system as a consequence of illicit sex. The cause is our cavalier glamorization of promiscuity. Wake up, America. Connect the dots.

America is seeing an increase in the number of dumbed-down, lethargic people. Bright minds are dimmed and enthusiasm for life diminished. Though there are many causes, one is the use of illicit drugs. Our president says marijuana is no worse than alcohol. He is right. Likewise, leprosy is no worse than cancer, but who wants either? Our attorney general says we need to take another look at our drug laws. Some states legalize the use of pot all the while more and more studies are showing even casual use adversely impacts the brain causing a lifetime loss of learning capacity, cognitive skill and energy.

That is the effect. The cause is an increased tolerance for recreational drug use. Wake up, America. Make the connection.

Crime is on the rise, fraud and embezzlement have become common place, cheating and vice proliferate, and character flaws abound. That is the effect. The cause is the two institutions that previously have been advocates for ethics and morality have been minimized, marginalized, and in instances mocked. They are the family and religious institutions. There are few public voices advocating virtue, values, integrity, honesty, purity, patriotism and religious faith. The absence of these admirable antidotes for corruption has produced an ethos whose mores have been eclipsed.

Sooner or later, everyone has to sit down to a meal of consequence. It is bad when every dish is laced with poison.

Unrestrained immorality eats at the soul of a nation as it does of an individual.

Perhaps we can’t change our total culture, but we can resolve that personally we will be an individual citadel of spiritual sanity.

The Rev. Dr. Nelson Price is pastor emeritus of Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta.
