CANTON — The Canton YMCA is declaring “Freedom from Hunger.” During the week of June 30 to July 3, the Y summer day camp will have a food drive to benefit North Georgia Community Action Inc. The community outreach project will collect food and raise campers’ awareness of the severity of the hunger crisis.

Collection sites will be set up all week at the day camp, at 151 Waleska St. in Canton. Campers will collect canned goods, pasta, rice, powdered milk, baby food, diapers, toiletries, paper products and more.

They also will participate in other hunger and nutrition awareness activities, including making healthy snacks, recognizing proper serving sizes and learning the effect income has on nutrition, and the impact of local and global hunger.

“The Freedom from Hunger project encourages our young people to reach out into their community, which promotes the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility,” said LaToya Bivins, camp director.
