The opening day of the Sequoyah Classic offered few surprises, with the teams expected to win doing just that.

Sequoyah, hosting the tournament for the 24th year, opened its season with a decisive win over Milton (25-18, 25-7) before another impressive win over Lambert (25-13, 25-13).

The Lady Chiefs will play Whitewater today at 10 a.m. in their final pool play match.

Etowah is off to a 2-0 start in its pool, as is Pope, in a Pool C with Sonoraville and Mount Vernon Presbyterian. Etowah and Pope will meet today at 9 a.m.

In Pool D, also being played at Etowah, Norcross is 1-1, with Northgate 2-0. Kell and South Forsyth were playing their second matches of the day late Friday evening, but both had a win to their credit.

In Pool H at Creekview, the Lady Grizzlies started 2-0, beating Houston County (25-17, 25-15) and Cartersville (25-14, 25-13).

River Ridge hosted matches in Pools E and F, at a site that also included Cherokee. The Lady Knights beat Northside-Columbus and Oconee County.

Woodstock was in Pool G with Allatoona, Starr’s Mill and Sprayberry.
