Hosting Woodstock and North Cobb in a tri-match Thursday at the War Lodge, Sequoyah came away with a spilt, beating the Lady Wolverines (25-21, 25-21) before falling to the Lady Warriors (25-19, 25-19).

Woodstock also faced North Cobb, dropping a 25-12, 25-23 decision.

Sequoyah, ranked fifth in the Class AAAA coaches poll, moved to 6-5 overall, while the Lady Wolverines lost their fifth straight and fell to 1-6 on the season.

North Cobb, ranked eighth in Class AAAAA, improved to 11-2 on the season.

"Anytime you can come into someone else's gym and win, you'll take it," North Cobb coach James Auld said. "Sequoyah is such a well-prepared team and (head coach) Kelly (Audia) always has them ready to play.

"In our other (match), you have to give Woodstock credit. They played hard and fought 'til the end and made a game of things. We had match point on them, but they nearly came back."

Carley Roberts and Brittnee Jones led the way for the Lady Chiefs in their win over the Lady Wolverines. Roberts finished with five kills and six digs, while Jones had five kills. Morgan Page totaled nine digs to go with her two kills and Morgan Downie finished with two kills and a team-high 17 assists.

Against North Cobb, Roberts totaled seven kills and 1.5 blocks, while Jones added four kills. Morgan Metraw had three kills.

"I was really pleased at how the team stayed aggressive and tried to go for their shots," Audia said. "I'm glad we weren't afraid. In our match against North Cobb, we just didn't get into a good rhythm until that second game.

"Woodstock, though, is much improved and they get better everytime they play. We got down early against them, but I'm proud of the girls for being so resilient. When things started clicking for us, we played well."

Sequoyah trailed from the beginning against North Cobb. Down 14-9 in the first game, the Lady Chiefs rallied to cut the Lady Warriors' lead to 16-15 after a Roberts kill. North Cobb went on to win six of the next seven points, however, to stake a 22-16 advantage en route to the first-game victory.

The Lady Chiefs established themselves in the second game, staking an 8-5 lead. But the Lady Warriors recovered to tie the contest at 10-all following a Sequoyah attack error. North Cobb eventually took a 12-11 lead it would never relinquish.

The margin grew to 20-14 after another Sequoyah attack error and the Lady Warriors held off a late rally from the Lady Chiefs.

Woodstock played North Cobb tough through the first 21 points of their first game and trailed by only one, 11-10, midway through the contest. But North Cobb went on an 11-0 run, catapulted by Woodstock attack errors and kills from Kristin Miller and Katie O'Rourke, to stake a 21-10 advantage before closing out the game.

North Cobb started the second game on a tear, taking an early 11-3 lead. Behind the service game of Erica Cox, the Lady Wolverines battled back and trailed 12-11 midway through the set and took a 14-13 lead on Cox's kill.

The Lady Wolverines increased their lead to 19-15 on a North Cobb service error, but the Lady Warriors came back to things at 20-all and led, 24-20, before settling on the final score of 25-23 in the second game.

"I thought we played both teams really tough," Woodstock coach Karen Baker said. "They're both ranked teams and our kids played their hearts out. We can only get better playing games like this against tough, quality opponents."
