Sequoyah experienced that last Friday at east Cherokee rival Creekview.
The Chiefs (1-1) have all the ingredients to be a force in Region 7AAAA. They're capable of running and throwing the ball on offense and their defense can make the plays at the line of scrimmage.
But sometimes, the Chiefs can get careless, especially in big situations.
A few costly penalties and mental mistakes attributed to Sequoyah's 13-7 loss to Creekview. The Chiefs can't afford to be sloppy on the big plays Friday when they play a region crossover game at sixth-ranked Hillgrove. The Hawks (2-0) are coming off a 14-3 victory at a Rome team which was a Class AAAA state semifinalist last season.
It's been the little things that have slowed the Chiefs this season. A roughing-the-kicker penalty against them set up a Creekview touchdown. They also fumbled on fourth-and-1 on their first drive of the second half, which stopped a productive drive.
Despite their shortcomings, Sequoyah coach James Teter has all the confidence in his players that they will learn from their mistakes and move forward.
"Practice has been upbeat. They've been focused and are ready to bounce back," Teter said. "Sometimes, it takes a loss like that to get you back on track. Everything we've seen on film is fixable."
It may take more discipline to contain Hillgrove's triple-option offense, orchestrated by quarterback Synjyn Days, a Georgia Tech commitment, and speedy tailbacks Kenyan Drake and Jabari Hunt.
Teter said one way of slowing down Hillgrove's offensive attack is by using his own offense to chew clock and keep Days and Co. on the sidelines.
The Chiefs are primarily a running team behind Dalton Trevino, who is closing in on 200 yards rushing for the season. Quarterback Ben Rogers also has the ability to manage games and make the adjustments needed to stay on the field and keep the Hawks' offense off it.
"Hillgrove has a lot of speed," Teter said. "They will run the option and will have a lot of speed. We've worked hard on knowing our assignments and wrapping those (Hillgrove) guys up because they're going to be fast.
"The key to us winning this game is to move the ball with the clock."
