The Grizzlies may have earned both of its wins this season by a combined nine points, but they count in the books just the same. A season ago Creekview learned just how much those losses count when it started out 0-3 after losing to Sequoyah, Flowery Branch and West Forsyth by a combined six points.
The Grizzlies (2-0), newly minted as the seventh-ranked team in Class AAA, will look to expand their margin of victory tonight when they avenge one those narrow losses of '08 by hosting West Forsyth (2-1).
"Quite honestly, a win is a win," Morrell said. "Last year, we lost the close games and, this year, we are winning them. I don't care if we are winning by one point. I'm very happy."
It's hard to say where the Grizzlies' strength rests. Against Sequoyah, the defense allowed just one touchdown. In last week's upset victory at Flowery Branch, the offense ran for 425 yards and five touchdowns.
A large part of the Grizzlies' success can be attributed to the distribution of the workload. No player is expected to do it all.
Running backs Eric Smith and Michael Ay and quarterback Cody Allen are producing yards and, with that, touchdowns. Last week, Smith and Ay rushed for a combined 332 yards, while Allen was 7-of-9 in the air for another 109.
Creekview has also been aided by a solid defense, led by Hunter Livingston and Ryan Holmes, as well as a strong special teams unit.
"They are all playing as a team and have all really come together," Morrell said. "I'm pleased with them."
The coach maintained that the biggest difference between the '08 team that started 0-3 and the team that is 2-0 this year is that they are making the plays when the need to.
"It's just one player here or there," Morrellsaid. "Whether it's a special teams play, or the offense coming up with a big play, or the defense.
"This year, we are just getting a couple breaks and making the plays when we need them. That's just how the ball bounces. Sometimes, you get the breaks. Sometimes, you make the plays and, sometimes, you don't. This year, we are just making the plays so far."
And, so far, it seems like someone different has been making the plays each week -something Morrell said is a good thing.
"It means we're a team," he said.
