School officials said they do not yet know why a Dean Rusk Middle School student brought a gun and ammunition to class on Tuesday.

The student, a 12-year-old seventh-grade boy, was arrested after being found with an unloaded .22-caliber handgun. He was charged with felony possession of a gun on school property.

A classmate spotted the weapon during the second class of the day at the school in Hickory Flat and reported it to school authorities. Ammunition for the gun later was found in the student's locker.

The student had not made any threats of violence, said Mike McGowan, director of public information, communications and partnerships for the Cherokee County School District.

No "hit list" was found nor was any other evidence that indicated the student had planned to harm anyone at the school, McGowan added.

"We're still investigating, so we don't know the reason yet," McGowan said. "He obviously made a stupid mistake."

The student, whose name is not being released as he is a juvenile, faces criminal charges as well as disciplinary action by the school district.

Principal Dr. Adrian Thomason sent a letter home to parents of all students at the school detailing what happened.

"Please know that the administration of Dean Rusk Middle School takes the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously," he wrote in the letter.

Thomason asked parents to talk with their children and remind them that no weapons of any kind are allowed on campus per district policy and state law.

Students also need to remember, he said, that it is "imperative" they share all concerns about safety with staff at the school.

The answer is not better security. The answer is better parents. How did he get this gun? Why in the world would he even think about taking it to school? There are obviously some issues at home. Maybe he didn't get the gun from home but if he did why wasn't it locked up? Or why wasn't he taught proper gun safety? Don't blame the school for something that is obviously the parent's fault, or possibly just the result of a mentally damaged child. Sometimes no matter what the parents do, their kids will do stupid things. Schools are already close enough to being prisons why make it worse?

dean rusk is amazing,,,this is the first time anything like this has ever happened,,,our school does the very best it can to keep us all safe,,enforcing more rules is just going to make the students want to break them even more,,and parents,it is not pathetic that you are going to blame a school for girls getting pregnant. If someone comes home pregnant, then that is al on the parents for not raising them right,,a schools job is to educate,,not raise,,maybe you should just be better at your job

The comments from the writer who thinks the schools should do more to enforce good behavior are typical of what is wrong with some parents today.

Don't blame "the schools" for your childs failure to understand proper behavior and respect.

If parents don't demand good behavior from their children don't expect the schools to do your job for you.

Be a responsible parent.

Why have tough rules if there are not going to use them? Kids are really heading down the wrong path these days. They have no since of guidance in the school. They are allowed to walk around holding hands, hugging and kissing while at school, IN THEIR CARE!!!! Not to mention right in front of them!!! Don't school policies prohibit that at school. Well at Creekview High, its allowed 24/7. So even if we as parents tell them NO, the school is giving the the Okay with it. So I truly know why Girls come home pregnant. We as Parents need to jump in together and demand the schools to Stop the nonsense that takes place. They are there to get an education, not a jump into Adult Hood.

kirkh: I haven’t heard of any knife massacres lately.

We can’t prevent a kid from leaving home with a weapon but we can prevent it from entering the school.

I’ll bet some Columbine parents wish that school had better security.

Maybe the PTA could do a fundraiser for improving security rather than buying flowers and picnic tables.

I do not think we could ask for a better administration than we have at Dean Rusk Middle School. They are the best and always look out for what is best for our children.

As to the question of "why" no lock down: because the gun is already inside the school. You don't lock the exits when the problem is already in the door.

As to the question of metal detectors: horsesqeeze- these kids should be afford every effort to insure weapons aren't in schools, but with abs plasitcs any kid can walk around with a knife type object that never detected. Jail the parents of the kids for child endangerment. Send that message enough times and weapons suddenly get locked into safes.

Dr. Thomason is it time for you to lobby the County to have DRMS security measures brought up to speed with the rest of the "modern" schools in the county?

DRMS needs metal detectors and card key locks.

Why should only the new schools have adequate security?
