Acclaimed storyteller and musician Andy Offutt Irwin will visit Canton next month to present the one-man show ‘Christmas at the Southern White Old Ladies Hospital’ on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Cherokee Arts Center.

Whether you're interested in a classic play or a contemporary celebration, Cherokee County performing and visual arts centers have the present for you this Christmas.

The month begins with two art exhibits that also offer an opportunity for creative gift shopping.

The Georgia Clay Council in conjunction with Art 101 Gallery present the inaugural Holiday Clay Market from Wednesday, Dec. 2, through Dec. 20 at the gallery at 101 Main St. in downtown Canton.

Admission is free, and hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. There will be an open house and artists' reception on Friday, Dec. 4, with music and mulled cider.

Arts Alliance of Georgia Inc. will display its Holiday Art Show and Sale at the Towne Lake Art Center at 6576 Commerce Parkway.

The opening reception is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, with the show and sale continuing from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 19 as well as on Dec. 22 and 23, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays through Dec. 20 and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Items for sale include fine art with a holiday flavor such as paintings, clay, handmade paper, collage, weaving and jewelry. Admission is free.

The Falany Performing Arts Center will celebrate the holiday season with three events.

A charming Christmas tale, "The Shoemaker and the Christmas Elves," will be brought to life at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, by Theatre IV, one of the nation's largest touring theatres for young audiences.

The musical takes a yuletide spin on the classic Brothers' Grimm fairy tale. Tickets are $20 for adults and $16 for seniors 55 and older and students younger than 12.

The Golden Bells of Atlanta will ring in the holiday season at the Falany at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. Tickets for the performance of holiday tunes are $20 for adults and $16 for seniors 55 and older and students younger than 12

The Reinhardt College Christmas Concert, a very popular annual event, is sold out for all performances.

The Towne Lake Arts Center is bringing Christmas shows to two locations this holiday season.

"A Christmas Carol" plays on the center's stage at 6576 Commerce Parkway Woodstock. The Dickens holiday classic features a cast of 40 singing original songs and traditional carols. Mike Jenks of Canton plays Scrooge this year, with Chris Hotz as Bob Cratchit, Brandon Brooks as Jacob Marley, Lauren LaRicci as Christmas Past, Sundeep Kothari as Christmas Present and Patrick Hughes as Christmas Future.

Performances are from Dec. 4 through 24 at 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays and Dec. 22 and 23, 3 p.m. on Sundays and at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and $8 for children age 12 and younger. School shows also are available with special pricing.

"The Little Drummer Boy" will be presented at the Woodstock Community Church at 8534 Main S. in downtown Woodstock.

The original libretto by center Artistic Director G. Lora Grooms was inspired by the Harry Simeone song. It tells the story of Daniel, played by Riley Dodson of Woodstock, his new drum and their encounters with the Three Kings, Mary and Joseph and the Innkeeper.

The opening performance is free and part of the City of Woodstock's Christmas Jubilee events.

The Cherokee Arts Center has planned four events to make the season bright.

"Santa at the Arts Center" is from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 5. The free event includes a visit with Santa and the opportunity to make on ornament and enjoy hot chocolate and cookies with Santa.

A Kennesaw Opry concert is set for that evening from 7 to 9 p.m. with two local bluegrass bands to perform. Tickets are $7 at the door.

The annual Stevens Gift Shoppe art show and sale will be open at the center from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, for a center-members-only preview sale and to the general public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, and noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.

The show features original pieces of art, pottery and jewelry among other unique gifts. Admission is free.

Irwin will spin the wacky and family friendly tales of Aunt Marguerite and her cronies during a Christmas in Georgia. Tickets are $10.

Stars Community Drama will stage the children's show, "Beauty and the Beast," at the Canton Theatre at 171 E. Main St.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, and at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and younger.

The Cherokee Chorale will present its Christmas concert, "An English Christmastide," on Sunday, Dec. 13.

The performance is at 3 p.m. at Canton First United Methodist Church at 930 Lower Scott Mill Road.

Conducted by John Barker, the chorale will sing John Rutter's "Magnificat" and selected Christmas carols arranged by Rutter. The Etowah High School Advanced Chorus, conducted by Ann Dalton Burgess, will be special guest performers for the concert.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and are for sale in advance at at the door. Advance tickets are for sale by chorale members and at the Cherokee Arts center and Chamberhouse in Canton, Three Sisters Gifts in Hickory Flat and FoxTale Book Shoppe in Woodstock.
