Give A Kid A Chance-Cherokee is one of 50 finalists in the nationwide Clorox Clean-Up Power a Bright Future program. The company is offering the grants to the five nonprofit agencies that receive the most votes. The winners will also be featured in People magazine.
Supporters can vote for the organization online at apps.facebook.com/brightfuture/causes/4620_give-a-kid-a-chance. Organizers are urging non-Facebook users to open an account so they can participate in the voting.
"One of our original goals was to show how you can have Give A Kid A Chance in your own community," Candi Hannigan of Towne Lake, one of the organizers of Give A Kid A Chance-Cherokee, said about the exposure being in People would give them. "Sharing this program with people across the country would be a wonderful opportunity."
She said the program saw an increase of 100 votes within a 24-hour period this week.
"I can see the momentum growing," she said, adding the program has consistently stayed in the top 12 in voting.
Voting runs through Jan.17. Supporters can vote once a day.
Mrs. Hannigan said voting is a no-cost way for people who are unable to give financially because of the economy to still help the cause.
"It is something you can do to help the children without costing anything," she said.
Cheryl Ruffer of Canton, an organizer of Give A Kid A Chance, said the grant would help the agency provide more help to Cherokee's children.
The organization gets children prepared for the school year by supplying them with free backpacks filled with school supplies, new socks and underwear and medical screenings. She said the organization would like to offer new sneakers and blue jeans to children as well.
"The $10,000 would go a long way to purchasing blue jeans or tennis shoes," she said.
The organization gave out 2,500 backpacks this year, 2,200 of them during its Back-to-School Bash event in July. More than 3,500 children and their families are expected at the event next year.
