Observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering

Cherokee County residents can observe Dr. Martin Luther Jr. Day through a community event on Saturday or by volunteering on Monday.

The 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Jr. Unity Breakfast is at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Allen Temple AME Church in Woodstock.

The free event is open to the community and includes breakfast, singing and guest speaker Canton City Councilwoman Pat Tanner. The theme is "Creating a Community of Unity."

Led by Pastor Carl Moore, who founded the annual event, the breakfast attracts a large crowd that includes elected officials and community leaders.

While admission is free, donations will be accepted for college scholarships awarded to local teens who win the church's essay contest.

All city, county, state and federal government centers, courts and offices will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday.

The Cherokee Area Transportation System shuttles and buses will not run. Trash pickup for Canton city customers will be delayed by one day.

The Holly Springs City Council meeting has been rescheduled to Jan. 21. The Canton Planning Commission meeting has been rescheduled to Jan. 25. The Woodstock City Council work session has been canceled.

The Waleska City Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday as scheduled.

The Cherokee County School District will not conduct classes on Monday and all offices will be closed.

Chattahoochee Technical College in Woodstock and Reinhardt College in Waleska have canceled classes, and the campuses will be closed. Chattahoochee Tech also will not conduct classes on Saturday.

All Sequoyah Regional Library System branches will be closed on Monday.

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce will be closed on Monday, as will many business offices.

All banks, financial institutions and post offices will be closed. Express Mail will be delivered.
