Cherokee County will celebrate Arbor Day next week with special events in Canton and Woodstock.

The Canton Tree City Commission and City of Woodstock on Friday, Feb. 19, will recognize the holiday with seedling giveaways and other special events.

The Canton event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cannon Park gazebo on the square in downtown Canton.

The Cherokee County Master Gardeners will give out free seedlings with four different species available: dogwood, redwood, crepe myrtle and wax myrtle. The volunteer gardening experts also will answer gardening questions.

The Tree City Commission will present its annual tree and shrubbery sale.

Some of the items included in the sale are: golden mophead, cedar, camellia, gardenia, quince, tea olive, Leyland cypress, Carolina jasmine, ajuca and mountain laurel. Also, there will be a variety of fruit trees and bushes for sale such as apple, peach, plum, pomegranate, fig and blueberry.

Proceeds from the sale go toward beautification projects in the city. The commission's most recent project was on the bank in front of R.T. Jones Memorial Library seen while approaching Interstate 575 exit 19 on Highway 20.

"Our goal is to landscape every entrance to the City of Canton," commission member Linda Schwamlein said.
