The YMCA Partner with Youth Annual Campaign in Cherokee County has set its goal higher for this year to meet a growing need.

Last year, hundreds of individuals, businesses and community volunteers came together to raise $136,000 to help 2,210 people participate in YMCA programs.

Through the campaign, scholarships are provided so disadvantaged youth can participate in programs at the Cherokee Outdoor YMCA at Lake Allatoona in Woodstock and the full service G. Cecil Pruett Community Center Family YMCA in Canton.

The campaign goal for 2010 is to raise $146,000 to serve the increasing number of local families who cannot afford summer day camp, sports programs, aquatics programs and exercise facilities.

The chairman of this year's campaign is John Adams, a longtime YMCA member and supporter.

"This campaign is extremely important to the children of Cherokee County," he said, noting all funds raised go toward enrolling children in YMCA programs. "Personally, I believe that this is vital towards building a solid foundation with our youth that will lead them into successful lives as adults. We expect to achieve our goal through the help of many individuals and businesses in Cherokee County."

Community partners supporting the campaign include Publix, Regions Bank, Wachovia Bank, Wal-Mart and many Cherokee County elementary and middle schools.

The Family YMCA in Canton is raising awareness of the Partner with Youth Campaign this month, which has been dubbed "Member Month," with the theme "Share Your Heart."

Returning this year to the campaign is the banner recognition program for major donors. Individuals or businesses giving $1,000 or more will be recognized with a banner featuring their name hanging in the lobby of the YMCA facility of their choice.
