The Georgia Army National Guard on Friday announced the troops of the 1/108th Cavalry of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team will depart on Tuesday morning from Ft. Stewart in Savannah.
The troops, who have been serving in Afghanistan for the past year, arrived back in the United States earlier this week and have been at Fort Stewart since for processing.
The 1/108th Cavalry troops are stationed in Canton, Calhoun, Cedartown and Rome. While in Afghanistan, the soldiers organized and trained the Afghan security forces and police.
The 87 soldiers from the Canton Armory will be escorted by local law enforcement along Interstate 575 from the county line to Canton. Their estimated arrival time in the county is between 11 a.m. and noon.
The motorcade will take exit 19 to Highway 20/Cumming Highway, travel through downtown and then on to the armory, which is on Marietta Highway next to Cherokee High School.
A short ceremony with the troops and their families then will be conducted at the armory. Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood is scheduled to appear at the ceremony.
The armory's Family Readiness Group is planning a larger community ceremony with a parade in May, Chairwoman Lisa Lewis said.
