The Marine Corps League Woodstock Detachment No. 1311 is hosting its first golf tournament Monday at the Towne Lake Hills Golf Club. Registration for the tournament will begin at 8 a.m.
Joe Kraft, the organizer of the tournament, said money raised from the tournament will go into a scholarship fund for the Woodstock High School Navy JROTC.
"We wanted to do a local fundraiser so that local businesses and citizens would donate for something that stays in Woodstock," he said. "A lot of charities solicit donations from businesses in Woodstock and nobody sees the result of that."
He said the goal for the tournament is to register 40 players for the event.
John Newport, commandant with the Woodstock Marine Corps League, said the league is doing well with sponsorship, but is trying to find golfers.
"The biggest challenge has been getting the word out," he said.
Entry into the tournament is $75 per player and $275 for a four-player team. For more information, call Kraft at (678) 858-8595.
The detachment was formed in 2008 and offers active, reserve and retired Marines the opportunity to help the community through public service programs. An honorable discharge is required to be a member. Newport said there are 36 members in the Woodstock detachment.
Newport said the detachment plans on making the tournament an annual event. The amount of the scholarship will be determined by the success of the tournament. The scholarship will go to a cadet chosen by the JROTC instructors at Woodstock High School. He said the detachment plans on making its first presentation to the recipient May 20.
"The Navy and Marines have been partners ever since the early days of this country," Newport said about the Marine Corps League helping the Navy JROTC. "They go together pretty well."
