Russ Nunley, vice president for marketing and communications, said a sign was removed Sunday evening since it led to confusion, and that the company's computers would make it impossible for military personnel to pay $9 for an $8.50 matinee, as was posted on the sign.
The Journal reported Saturday that Marietta resident Jim Fleming, who retired as Kennesaw State University's vice president, went to the theater last week with his wife and friends when they noticed the sign stating adults pay $8.50 for a matinee, while military personnel pay $9.
Nunley said the military discount is only for evening shows, which cost other adults $11. The price for military personnel was listed under matinee and evening show prices.
Only children and seniors receive a discount for matinees, before 3 p.m. Seniors pay $8, children pay $7.50 and all adults pay $8.50 for a matinee show, Nunley said.
"Regal does proudly offer a military discount at the Town Center, many theatres do not offer any discount for military, Nunley said. "The intention was never to charge military patrons more than others who attend matinees. In fact, our box office computers would not allow the student or military price to be used for a matinee show time. This is a way to ensure that no one was overcharged. No members of the military were asked to pay a higher price for admission to matinees, as our box office system will not allow that error to occur. We regret that a sign posted earlier caused some confusion, but no member of the military or student was ever charged more than the matinee price when they attend matinee shows."
The Journal ran a photo of the sign depicting the pricing described by Fleming with Saturday's article and spoke with an employee at the theater, who said media inquiries go to the company's headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. Messages left at the corporate office Friday morning were not returned until Monday afternoon.
As of noon on Monday, pricing was depicted on a rolling ticker under show times rather than on a sign.
