Gov. Sonny Perdue on Friday signed into law legislation that would ban texting while driving for all Georgia drivers. The legislation also forbids young drivers with provisional licenses from using their cell phones while behind the wheel.

What do you think of the new legislation? Do you support a ban on texting or cell phone use while driving? Why or why not?

The problem isn't texting, it's the fact that the average person is a moron and is paying more attention to something other than the road. I can easily text while driving and still pay lots more attention to the road than I am my phone. I'm capable of doing that because I realize that I'm on the road and I take a much longer time to text and focus on the phone only during periods where me not having my eyes on the road for a second (ie. not in a curve, right beside another driver, etc) and take less time during those periods than even using my car's radio takes me.

If you want to make the roads safer, banning actions that can be done safely isn't the way you do it. Actually trying to teach people to be smart (something our school systems still aren't focused on cause they are too busy making sure you aren't cheating when the average person isn't even smart enough to cheat very well) and think about the situation and ask themselves "if something happens the moment my eyes leave the road will I have enough time to react safely when my eyes get back to the road?". If the answer is anything other than yes then that person needs to wait until the conditions change before doing anything other than driving (this includes changing the radio, eating, whatever)

BAN on Using the cell phone & texting while driving is the law which should have been imposed many many years back, many lives would have been saved

Definitely agree with the texting while driving ban, but don't think it went far enough for adults. At the very least, it should require hands-free telephone use. I don't text or email (except if I'm stopped at a light), but I am guilty of talking on the phone. I do feel I'm not concentrating on my driving as much when I'm talking.

I support the decision, and I think it should have included adults, too.

When I need to use my cell phone, when I am on the road, I find a place to pull over and use my phone.

I do not think drivers can give full attention to their driving and think about a phone call at the same time, especially if the phone call is upsetting.
