Canton Marketplace shoppers and Governor's Walk residents will see some traffic relief - likely by the end of the year.

Canton Mayor Gene Hobgood said on Tuesday that the wait will soon be over for a traffic signal on Highway 20 at the intersection of the neighborhood entrance and the first entrance for the shopping center.

He said Department of Transportation board member Brandon Beach, who represents all of Cherokee County, was "instrumental" in gaining the OK from the agency to install a signal there.

"The city appreciates the work that Mr. Beach did in getting approval for this signal," Hobgood said.

North Cherokee Electrical has been contracted to install the signal, with "every effort" being made to complete the work by the end of the year.

Governor's Walk residents have complained since the center's opening in February of last year that they could not easily get in and out of the neighborhood.

Hobgood said residents of Birchwood and Oakridge Estates also have had "extreme difficulty" because of the lack of a signal.

Shoppers, too, have found themselves stuck in long lines to get in and out of the center, and many resort to illegal and dangerous maneuvers.

Some residents of areas on either side of the center, however, have complained another light will make their commutes past the busy center even longer.

Hobgood said signalization will be coordinated for both the new light and lights all the way to the east side of Canton to improve flow throughout the area.

Did anyone think about making the road a 4 lane when they already had everything tore up? I'm sure it will cost more now to go back and make it right.

Having drive thru that area often, it appears there was little if any consideration for traffic. Did the planners not think that people might shop at this place?

Now we will have four lights west of the 575 exit 19 ramp. This light will be about five car lengths from the exit ramp. But it is the only thing that you can do now that the sight is built.

How about building a few more roads in this State?
