As Cherokee residents gear up to head to the polls for Election Day on July 20, incumbents and challengers will scramble to make their case as to why they should represent us in various aspects of government.

In the Cherokee County school board Post 6 race, incumbent Debi Radcliff is being challenged by political newcomer Rob Usher. Both candidates say they want to help the Cherokee County School District in keeping budgets cuts as far away from the classroom as possible.

What other education issues would you like to see both candidates address? Do you believe the school board is headed in the right direction or does it needs, as Usher said, “fresh ideas?”

I would love to see someone look at the school's "tribunal" process. I believe that our county has conflicting policies on the expectations of our juveniles. On the one hand they are have few if any consequences for law violations yet they are expelled from school via the tribunal to a school with a "zero" tolerance policy. Once a child has "any" infraction post tribunal they are simply expelled. Legal? Sure. Ethical? Not sure. The reality is that a child with no education will likely be a burden rather an asset to our community. Shouldn't we work to improve on this?

This school board election should be about allowing parental choice in education -- that means charter schools and vouchers. It's the 21st century, let's get progressive in our approach to education.
