RESACA - A man wanted in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend was in intensive care at a hospital after he was wounded in a confrontation with deputies, authorities said.

Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said deputies were called to a residence in Resaca on Thursday, where they found 19-year-old Cody Shawn Adams and 17-year-old Dustin Lee Henderson, one of them shot in the leg and the other in the back. The two were taken to a hospital.

Authorities say Paul Buchannon, 38, of Calhoun shot the two teens, then kidnapped Henderson's mother, Christy Ann McKnight, 40, from the home and forced her into a car.

Deputies tracked the woman's phone signal to an area near the Whitfield County line, and found her body on railroad tracks. They said she had been shot in the head.

Dozens of law enforcement officers were called to search the woods for Buchannon.

Ralston said a search team found Buchannon in a thickly wooded area Thursday night, and officers shot him after he drew a gun.

Gordon County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Robert Paris says Buchannon was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he was in the intensive care unit Friday. The teens' conditions were unknown.

The gun recovered from Buchannon was the same one used to shoot the woman and teens, Ralston said.
