Woodstock City Councilman Steve Faris has announced he'll step down at the end of the month, prompting the need for a special election.

Faris, who is serving his second term representing Ward 6, said in a letter that he's "experiencing wonderful and exciting changes in my personal life that will take me away from Woodstock."

He announced his resignation during Monday night's council meeting, citing his last day of service would be Aug. 31.

"By stepping down now, I will leave the city at a very appropriate, indeed opportune, time," he said in the letter. "Conditions are such today that other highly-qualified individuals residing within Ward 6 will be able to pick up right where I am leaving off."

Faris was first elected in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007. He is married and has three daughters. He is a principal consultant for a utility company.

City Manager Jeff Moon said the council will talk about scheduling a special election after Faris' last day.

The council on Monday night also talked about a proposed agreement with the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners for the SPLOST renewal referendum to be on the November general election ballot.

The current SPLOST will expire in July 2012, and the proposed six-year extension could generate an estimated $185 million in revenues.

City projects to be funded by the extension, if approved by voters, include the Arnold Mill Road Bypass, the Arnold Mill Road and Towne Lake Parkway widening, Noonday Creek and wastewater treatment plant improvements and road resurfacing. Money will also be used for public safety possibly including a new fire station and parks, recreation and cultural arts facilities.

The council heard the first reading of the agreement and will hear the second reading and vote during a special called meeting on Monday.
